Where the Beach Meets the Ice

There is ONLY ONE home games left in the 2011-2012 season. Join us at the Garden when we battle University of Colorado on Saturday  January 21, 2012 at 7:30pm.

The 49ers will finish at the home season at Glacial against Colorado which will include our farewell to graduating seniors, presentation of the Northy Memorial Spirit Award, and prizes galore for our fans = Kings tickets, autographed Kings memorabilia, gift cards, and more.

This final home game will also be my, Phillip Goodman's, retirement night. After 10 seasons as announcer and other managerial roles, I have decided to move on to pursue some other potential career endeavors and free up time to spend with family, local and abroad.

I hope to see you at what will be a very special evening of hockey with friends.

 GO BEACH!

49ers Fight off Trojans for 4-3 Win

Robbie Zdjelar’s late third period goal gave the Long Beach State 49ers a 4-3 win over the Univ. of Southern California before a standing-room only crowd on Friday night in Lakewood. Brad Roberts and Chris Chan assisted on the goal giving Rick St. Louis the win in net while Alex Caravaggio suffered the loss for the Trojans.

The season opener exploded out of the gate with furious end-to-end action and neither netminder surrendering any ground in the first period. Two minutes into the second period, Brad Roberts broke the scoring seal with a rebound goal with assists to Zdjelar and freshman Ian Hoang. USC quickly bounced back with a goal of their own to tie the score at 1-1.

With about six minutes to play in the second, rookie 49er Zac Zomaya threw the puck on net and it deflected off Tyler Robertson and in for a 2-1 lead. That lead would be short lived as the Trojans struck back on the next shift again to even the score 2-2 after two frames.

Zac Zomaya would break the tie two minutes into the third with a nifty top-shelf snipe over Caravaggio, but the pesky Trojans managed to even the tilt halfway through the period.

Both squads generated quality scoring opportunities and landed some huge hits. Overtime seemed certain until with less than three to play Brad Roberts found Chris Chan streaking down left wing to start a two-on-one with Zdjelar on the far right wing. Chan sauced a perfect pass over the Trojan defender’s stick that Zdjelar banged home past Caravaggio for the game winner.

Hoang and Zomaya each had two points in their rookie debuts plus veteran defenseman Matt Rushton tallied one assist.

Long Beach takes Colorado by storm this weekend, battling Colorado State Univ. on Friday at 7pm (MTN) and Univ. of Colorado on Saturday at 7:30pm (MTN).
