49er Ice Hockey Season
Preview
Expectations are high for a 49er squad that went
15-13-2 in the 2009-2010 campaign. Seniors Sean Hoang and Scott Byrum will
be joined by Junior forward Skyler Hoar on what might be the most exciting
top line to watch in the West Division of the American Collegiate Hockey
Association. They each possess explosive speed, crafty puck-handling, and a
knack for finding the back of the net.
Tanner Woodbury and Captain James Robelotto will
anchor the defense along with senior assistant captains Kevin Brown and Nick
Kemp. Although Kemp is on the injured list for the start of the season,
sophomore Matt Rushton will drop back on defense. Rushton returns to the
49ers after a two-year stint serving for the Marines in Afghanistan. In
honor of him and all the brave men and women that protect our freedoms, the
49ers will host Military Appreciation Night in January. All members of every
military branch and their guests will be admitted to games on 1/14 & 1/15
for only $1. Other details will follow soon.
Long Beach has a tough schedule ahead as the local
competition has intensified. CSU Fullerton, CSU Northridge, and Loyola
Marymount, gave the 49ers bitter fights last season and will make for
exciting matches at home and on the road.
The 49ers have two make-or-break roadtrips with the
first coming in October, a three-day tournament at San Jose to battle San
Jose State Univ., Univ. of Colorado, and Eastern Washington Univ. All three
teams were ranked in the top five of the West region last season. In January
the 49ers go to Spokane, WA to see Eastern Washington Univ. two more times.
All the 49ers are optimistic about what the season
will hold.
“We are really excited for the new found depth,”
said Captain Robelotto. “We seem to have strong team chemistry already and
it’s very early in the season.”
When asked which of the new players this season has
the potential to make the most impact, Coach Sheehy succinctly replied, “All
of them.”
